Carved main doors (Thiruvasal): styles, woods and what they cost

In a Tamil home, the main door is not just an entrance — it is a statement of welcome and a guardian of the threshold. A well-made Thiruvasal can outlive the people who commissioned it.

Choosing the wood

Burma teak is the first choice for a carved main door: it holds fine detail, resists the sun and rain on an exposed elevation, and ages into a deep golden tone. Seasoned and weather-sealed, it handles the South Indian climate without splitting.

Traditional vs modern carving

Traditional Thiruvasal carries deity motifs, lotus and creeper patterns, and kalasam detailing. A modern interpretation keeps clean panels with a single carved band — quieter, but still unmistakably handmade. We do both, and often a blend.

A door carved by hand is the one thing in a house that a photograph can never quite capture.

Hardware that disappears

Concealed modern locks, soft-close pivot hinges and a smart lock if you want one — fitted so the traditional face of the door stays uninterrupted. Security and tradition do not have to fight.

What it costs in 2026

A solid teak carved main door with frame typically runs ₹85,000 to ₹2.5 lakh depending on size, carving density and hardware. A heavily carved double-door for a villa entrance can go higher.

We make and install carved main doors across Madurai, Theni, Dindigul, Trichy and beyond. Share your entrance dimensions and we will sketch options for you.
